Glock Day at Bulls Eye London

Well my obsession with visiting gun stores continues with one on Friday, FOUR yesterday, and today I took advantage of the nice weather to take a road-trip to Bulls Eye London.

Given the frequency of my visits I am no longer documenting every single one but I do keep my camera in the car just in case something special arises and how fortunate as this weekend was a Glock event at Bulls Eye! I wish I had known about it sooner as I would have arrived earlier than 1 hour before closing.

The Glock reps on site had samples of their product line (see below), swag to hand out, and performed free tune ups to your Glock. Of course, there were also in-store deals on Glocks.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I took the opportunity to check out the new single stack 48, designed with the Canadian market in mind with its 106mm barrel. The single stack was quite a strange sensation to me in contrast to the huge grips on my personal Glocks (G20 and G34 with the Taran Tactical John Wick package). I look forward to shooting it next week at GAT Show.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

With some swag

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

And compared to the G40, the long-slide 10mm.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Apparently the G40 is popular for wilderness ATC where you need a power factor of .41 magnum or above. I have come to like the long slide Glocks and would love to shoot this side by side with my G20.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Finally, the G19X…I have shot this a couple of times and you can definitely notice a difference over the G19 in terms of controllability with the larger frame.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Thanks again to the reps for all the useful info and of course to Bulls Eye for hosting.

5.11 / Glock Day, Triggers, and Bulls Eye

Given that gun stores are located so far away from downtown Toronto, I typically like to go on “tours” to multiple locations at a time. Today TheShmoo and I hit Urban Tactical, Triggers and Bows, Bulls Eye London, and Select Shooting! We snapped a few pics on the way and hopefully this post can be helpful to those of you considering the guns that we will cover and if you are thinking of buying from these stores.

URBAN TACTICAL
I have been to Urban Tactical several times but never to one of their events until today’s 5.11 / Glock Day! This annual event is usually held on or as close to possible May 11, or 5.11 and features sales on both product lines as well as the chance to shoot the Glock lineup. Staff from Glock Canada were also on hand to answer questions and work on your Glock.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Lots of Glock swag around

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Including a chance to win from the prize table

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Ok on to the range…I believe there were 6 different models on the line, including the 17, 19, 22 and 34 (forgot the others).

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I was hoping for a 17C, 17L or 26 but no luck so I decided not to shoot (as I already tried all the ones on the line)…. it was still great to see new and experienced shooters having fun. Shooters getting pointers from the ROs before firing away…

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

All done on the range, TheShmoo and I hit the store to check out some guns.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Again, no luck on the Glocks I want (especially the G26 ☹ ) so I took another look at the G34…quite different in feel compared to my Taran Tactical John Wick 2 gun.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I love shopping with TheShmoo because he always spots those rare/unique guns so quickly…this time a Colt Anaconda in .44magnum.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

It was really packed and we didn’t want to take too much time photographing guns so on to the rest of the store….besides, i came with a mission of getting some new mid-length boots

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I liked the Salomon XD Forces GTX Mid and will come back to try them on when it is less crowded.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I wasn’t too familiar with Snugpak bags before today

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

But this shiny one looked great..i have since done some research and found out that they have a great reputation..i will have to take a closer look next time

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Lots of tactical gloves from 5.11, TurtleSkins, Mecanix, and Oakley

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

In terms of their knives, I liked that mini-Kukhri and the trainer on the left

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Big selection of Yeti coolers

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

In terms of clothing, the tactical shirts were really nice

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

As were some of the funny Tshirts

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Last stop before hitting the barbeque was the Garage Sale where theShmoo picked up the last Blackhawk Nomex Balaclava for $10! (damn his eagle eye, I would have snagged that) and a drum mag conversion for his shotgun for $20!

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

So all in all a great event and now that I know it is an annual one, I will definitely be back next year.

TRIGGERS AND BOWS

I had never been to Triggers and Bows before (just a 15 min drive from Urban) so was a bit shy about taking pics with my DSLR but I could not resist the urge to snap at least a few phone pics.

This was my first time actually seeing a Hi-Point in person and it was even bigger/heavier than I imagined! Think Motorola Brick phone.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I was also surprised to see the new ZEV O.Z-9, their first fully in-house gun. All internals are made by Zev but are compatible with Glocks. The frame is different and angled more like a 1911. I was surprised at the length of the handle and I cant imagine a human with hands that are too large for this grip.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

And check this out, a real Red Ryder!!! I didn’t know they were still making these

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Remember to wear eyepro so you don’t shoot your eye out

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I would totally rock this gun sock if only it fit a real full size rifle

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

It was great to find out T&B also offers range rental and I will check out their range next time.

BULLS EYE LONDON

My main reason for visiting Bulls Eye today was to check out the new Cadex Sheepdog. This “vaporware” gun has been talked about for years and has finally hit our market. The idea is to put a Cadex action in a more conventional stock as opposed to the full chassis we are used to seeing. This is very appealing to me as I am looking for something lighter like a Remington M-24. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Cadex chassis and I get the advantages of having a stable platform etc, I just want something lighter.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

From that perspective, I was shocked at the beefiness of the Sheepdog. While it may be lighter than the chassis guns on paper, to me it felt the same. Sure, the action is super smooth and the ergonomics are good but if I were to get something that heavy, I would just get one of their standard models. For size comparison.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Score they had the ZEV O.Z-9 as well so I could take a closer look. This time I tried the trigger and it was great! I really want to shoot this.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I bought my MR223 through Bulls Eye, a black one with 14.5” barrel and I have been meaning to check out the 11” variant in RAL2000..in addition to the smaller size, this one had m-loc instead of a quad rail and conventional sights instead of the adjustable diopter one on mine…still a beauty of a gun.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Perhaps my favourite gun of the day was the Sig CSOR commemorative edition….the grip feels different than a conventional P226 and I actually like all the markings.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

We also looked at the HK Mark 23 SOCOM and GSG MP-40, which was surprisingly beefy for a .22lr (sorry no pics).
As always, great to catch up with the crew at Bulls Eye and I will be back soon when my order comes in.

We stopped off at Select Shooting on the way home in the hopes of checking in on Dean but alas he was not at the store. We did not stay long enough to take pics but had a nice chat.

Always fun to spend the day doing gun related things…cant wait till GAT show next month.

2019 Toronto Sportsmen’s Show

It was great to see Tactical Imports back at the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show! The last time they were here it was amidst a huge buzz around the Type 81, now available with both a fixed stock

And folding stock.

Truth be told, I didn’t think the Type 81 was my style of gun. However, I really like this variant with genuine issue quad rail! Now THIS is something I would buy!

TheShmoo liked it too.

More my typical speed, the HK G36 which I had seen at a previous event but wanted a closer look. The first thing I noticed is how light it is compared to my HK MR223 (granted that one has a ton of accessories hanging off it but still). Tactical Imports will be bringing in more of these and the ones with Walther barrels (in place of HK) will be priced accordingly.

At that same event where I first saw the G36, I had the opportunity to try another TI exclusive, the BRS-99 and it is incredibly fun to shoot!

TI also brought a nice selection of Extrema Ratio knives, including the KH at my request (thanks gents!). This is ER’s take on a kukri except with multiple grinds to make it a great chopper and slasher.

I like the drop-leg sheath as well.

The RAO II, same great features of the RAO but with a different blade profile.

Next stop, Nikon. They always have something great for the show, last year it was the $10,000 star gazing binoculars (and old field microscope), this year their new red-dot

And one of my favourites of the show, these mini-binoculars….incredible performance for such a small size.

Another show surprise, this time at the Stoeger booth, was this one-off Benelli concept shotgun with leather wrap and crazy fiber optic ghost ring sights among many other unique features

Stoeger introduced the Victrix line of precision rifles such as this Pugio at last year’s show…they have been very well received among law enforcement communities.

Also at Stoeger’s booth, Steiner optics such as the ShadowQuest, designed for lower light hunting

The Military Marine

Commanders

In search of more firearms, I headed over to the Bell Outdoors booth where I was greeted by the Hatsan Escort Raider mag fed

Versus the new Escort DF12 with more AR like controls

However my favourite shotgun by far was the Escort TFS or “top folding stock”

With the stock extended

Still more firearms at Shooter’s Choice

And AIM Firearms and Outdoors, one of our newest gun stores.

That about covers it for firearms so moving on to more gear….I discovered Nanuk at last year’s show and have since acquired two of their cases…amazing pieces of kit! New this year is a 36” version of their long gun case for carbines or take down rifles.

And specs on the rest of their lineup of gun cases

It was great to connect with Dan, he is a great ambassador for the industry.

Nice poster they had at their booth too lol

Another one of my show favourites, the Garmin 701 with Ballistic calculator. My next wrist instrument for sure (too bad I wasn’t wearing my Surefire Luminox 2011 for size comparison)

I would be happy with a Tactix too…especially this blacked out version!

While the Sportsmen’s Show is focused on hunting and fishing, you can find tactical gear if you look hard enough. I really liked Mgear’s style, especially their belt buckle knife all held together by magnets.

Some EDC cards from Mgear.

Custom hunting knives from Ron Post

Helle Knives of Sweden at the Canadian Outdoor Equipment booth

Along with Gransfors axes

Of course attending such shows is not just about guns and gear, it’s also about meeting and re-connecting with industry folk, like Amanda Lynn Mayhew and Baby Goes Pew Pew at Just Hunt

Tony Bernardo and Jarlath at the CSSA, working tirelessly for our gun rights

As are Rod and Tracey from the CCFR

As usual, I don’t cover the fishing or boating sections as I don’t know enough about those to do them justice. I will say that the fishing section appeared to be especially busy this year…way more people than in the hunting / firearms sections.

So the bottom line is that I know people in the firearms community would like to see more representation of our sport, especially having restricteds but I think it is still a worthwhile visit. I always manage to find something that I like and it is a great opportunity to re-connect with people.

While I am not a huge fan of the International Centre, one benefit of the venue is its proximity to my favourite place for souvlaki, Zet’s, which TheShmoo and I hit on our way back from the show.

While Zet’s was filling, our gun appetite was not totally satisfied so we stopped off at Al Flaherty’s for dessert. Here we were pleased to find a Mossberg 590A1 Retrograde, complete with its wood furniture.

Although we just saw a Victrix Pugio at the show, this was our first time seeing one in the wild, so to speak.

Victrix doesn’t just make tactical rifles, here is one of their competition guns with the lightest trigger I have ever experienced

The new Sig M400 Tread…very light and streamlined

The new Sig Select series in 1911 and P226 with the matching custom grips and rails among other features

The new Kahles Helia RD

No major purchases for me, just some LEO over-run training ammo

All in all a great day.

FOC Surefire Industry Spotlight 2019

Posted by rlaufer2013 on March 10, 2019
Posted in: Guns and Knives, Uncategorized. Leave a comment

I have been to most of FOC’s Industry Spotlights and this may very well have been the best one yet! I had a great time checking out the new Surefires and doing the low light force on force training! Not to mention shopping!

As a big Surefire fan I was very pleased with the selection…practically everything in their lineup was on display or at least well represented.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Let’s start with the UDR Dominator, with 2,400 lumens!

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Some of the many new lights for this year, the Scout with duel fuel, Fury with 1500 lumens, the Tactician collaboration with James Yaeger, and the Backup now with MaxVision and 400 Lumens.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

A closeup of the Tactician

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

And with the Classic G2ZK, which is what I used in the training and I loved it!

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I know it is not the newest design but I think it might have been my favourite of the day.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

You can see the MaxVision version of the G2Z here along with the Tactician and E2D Defender

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Sidekick, Firepack, Stilletto, Guardian

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

The Firepack attached to your smartphone..and gives you 1500 Lumens!!!

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I saw the Stilletto at SHOT 2018…it is meant to be carried like a pocket knife. A more powerful version, the Pro, was released at this year’s SHOT

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

EDC, Aviator, and Backup

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

More handhelds

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Wristlights…they didn’t have the Luminox version

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Fortunately I brought mine 😊

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Now on to weaponights

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

MasterFire holster system…there is a slider outside the holster that allows you to control whether the light comes on or not upon withdrawal…very cool!

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

More weaponlights on display

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

And weapon accessories, including muzzle brakes, suppressors (at least trainers) and a rebar cutter!

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Rapid Transition sights

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

We all got Sonic Defender ear protectors as a gift…thanks..and also for the tshirt!

There was also a display of Wiley X eyewear to check out

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Note the foam lining

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Looking at all those Surefires sure put me in the mood for Chimera’s Low Light very informative seminar

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

After the classroom session, we headed to the range for some hands on training! We started with drills using handheld and weapon mounted lights including transitioning between the two. I learned A LOT from the experience!

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Then we did some force on force training using SIRT guns! I didn’t get any pics as it was pitch black and it is kinda hard to take pics and avoid gun fire lol. It was an awesome experience! I plan to sign up for some Chimera courses.

Last but not least, some shopping!

This one almost brings a tear to the eye as it might be the last time I can hold one of these if the liberals get their way.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

While we are feeling nostalgic, a S&W 4556 for you Miami Vice fans.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

A rare Sig P320 PRO Series, which is essentially a P320 X-Carry frame mated with a full-sized P320 X-FIVE slide.

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Also pretty rare, the Remington Little Beaver, a 14” factory barrelled mag-fed 870

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

And Remington 870 Police Magnum with Walnut Furniture

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I have an MR223 in black and I wanted to have a closer look at the RAL..very nice

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

I also wanted to have another look at the SFP…the trigger felt better than the P30L…I would love to shoot one

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

And now for something different lol…a Performance Centre Hunter in .44magnum

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Ok who wore it better, me or brasslovingbrunette???

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

While browsing the store I noticed a huge new supply of Grey Fox Strategic holsters…great gear and I really like the new hillbilly flannel camo pattern!

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

And since many of you ask, at the excellent suggestion of a fellow CGNer, I hit Angelique’s for breakfast….Philly Steak, eggs, and hashbrowns to be specific

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““““

All in all a fantastic event and a fantastic day!

Thanks FOC, keep up the great work!

2019 Toronto AutoShow

Well it has been a long time since I have done a review of something not gun related but I think the 2019 Toronto Autoshow is worth it.

I did have one major gripe with the show though, and that was the poor lighting. I don’t know why it was so much darker than previous years and it made taking pics very challenging. I don’t think I did full justice to some of the truly spectacular cars.

Speaking of, let’s start with Toronto rapper Drake’s new Devel! It is just as over the top in real life and the super short front overhang with the long rear (supposedly housing 5,000HP) reminds me of the Batmobile. It certainly made everything else look ordinary.

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Next the incredible carbon fiber bodied McLaren Senna

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Note the gold exhaust

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Some interior shots

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

That door though

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Lucas Scarfone is like Canada’s Shmee150 or Chris Harris lol…he started out as a photographer and recently launched AutoStrada magazine, which can now be found in bookstores alongside Road&Track and other big publications! He had a booth again this year with some great cars from his customers, including a Ferrari F50 and the actual Jaguar XJ220 that Angelina Jolie drove in Gone in 60 Seconds.

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Other cars at his booth included a Maserati MC12, Bugatti Veyron, Porsche Carrera GT, McLaren SLR, and Lexus LFA

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Other exotics on display included some old and new Aston Martins

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

And the ginormous new Rolls Royce SUV

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

On my way back to the main show floor I ran into John Wick’s car, a 69 Mustang..seems like I was wearing the right shirt.

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

I have to say that I am not an especially big fan of the Acura NSX but the GT3 version is one of the nicest cars I have ever seen! Once again, my pics don’t do its carbon fiber skin justice.

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

I love racecars in general and the Audi lemans cars were also among my favourites of the show.

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Sadly no GT2, RSR or racer at Porsche this year but they did have a GT3RS and GT4

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Elsewhere in the show, Steve McQueen’s Porsche

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Thankfully BMW had my favourite of their lineup, the M5 Competition on display in a beautiful matte blue

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

In keeping with blue super sedans, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio has a Ferrari designed engine that puts out 505HP from a 2.9L V6!

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Not a sedan but equally blue and equally super, the Dodge Hellcat Redeye, replacing the limited run Demon

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

However 700-800HP American cars are not so rare these days…Corvette ZR1

““““““““““““““““““““““““

And if you really wonder what a Mustang looks like underneath, here is one on its side

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Compared to the GT500, the milder Bullitt

““““““““““““““““““““““““

My friend had an older generation Supra and I remember it being a bigger car than the new one, or at least this was a lot smaller than I expected….closer to the FRS I guess.

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

It is interesting that they had a display of military vehicles at the show, including a Sherman Tank!

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

APC

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

and the military version of the G-wagen

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

Meanwhile at the Mercedes booth, no crazy G-wagen this year, just a black G63

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

2 and 4 door AMG GTs

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

E63S

““““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““““

I will close off with perhaps the most spectacular car of them all, or perhaps non-car, the Lego Bugatti Chiron! I cannot imagine the time it took to put this together…and I believe it runs too! The detail was mind-boggling.

FOC Project UNUM VIP Launch Party

NOTE: THIS IS A REPOST FROM 2018. MY PHOTO SITE CRASHED AND I RE-UPLOADED THE PICS TO THIS INCREDIBLE EVENT THAT WAS WORTH REVISITING. IT WAS ORGANIZED BY FIREARMS OUTLET CANADA, THE TEAM BEHIND THE TACCOM SHOW.

Pics from the FOC Project UNUM VIP Launch Party!

Once again Firearms Outlet Canada sets the standard for events in the firearms industry. Seriously the closest thing I have experienced to the Project UNUM VIP Launch Party was the launch party for the Lamborghini Huracan!

Just to recap, Project UNUM is the first in FOC’s new Signature Series. The intention is to bring together Canadian brands into a limited production (10 in this case) collaboration. Project UNUM features a Glock 19 with slide/framework and stipling by Red Tower Armoury, parts by Rehlm, custom holster and mag carriers by Grey Fox Strategic, a customized Glock knife, and a fantastic Nanuk case with custom cut foam insert.

A total of 300 VIP guests were invited to the event and were randomly drawn for a chance to purchase one of the 9 UNUMs for sale with the serial number of their choice.

First, let’s have a look at the gun itself! FOC graciously gave The Shmoo and I early access (much appreciated!) and we were among the first people to ever handle this beauty! BTW, the purple lighting looked great in person but made pics a bit challenging.

I have to say that the custom stipling and Rehlm baseplate made a HUGE difference in the feel of the G19. I have shot a conventional G19 and found it to be too small for my hands but this one felt great!

While we were ogling the UNUM, the FOC team was setting up the event outside. Check out this cool Glock ice sculpture (with Jello shots lol)

Oyster bar

And cheese platters…you know you are among friends when the Chef is using a Spyderco!

Bar (each VIP got 2 drink tickets)

And DJ!

An idea of the well-dressed crowd.

Where I ran into Farmboy and Houlie Precision.

And my good friends from Nanuk and Code of Arms

Nanuk and Grey Fox Strategic

Of course the store and warehouse were open during the event and I will get to those in a minute but first the draws for the UNUM!

Congrats to all the winners!

Ok on to shopping!

The gun on the tripod is the latest chassis from Rehlm, this one on a .22-250 action.

Some of the usual great selection at FOC.

This time I wanted to do some comparison pics so I started with two military SIGs, the M11-A1 and M17.

As I suspected, the M11-A1 was too small for my hands (at least without the mag inserted). Still a nice gun though.

Next I wanted to get another look at the TRP, especially compared to another of my “shortlist” 1911s, the Colt M45A1. Hmmm, really tough choice!

Continuing with comparisons, the FN 509 and Five-Seven.

The 509 felt GREAT in the hand! I really want to shoot one. I have shot a Five-Seven before but I didn’t remember it being so big! (or at least thick)

As usual, The Shmoo is great at spotting limited editions across the room although ironically you would think this CZ Shadow 2 Maria Gushchina is visible from Mars lol. I think I found something to match all my bling!

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this gun was the weight! Noticeably heavier than a standard Shadow.

The Shmoo also spotted the Wilson Combat Beretta. I shot the standard one (under supervision of Ernest Langdon!) at SHOT show but FOC had both the full size and compact.

Not sure if it shows in the pics but there is quite a difference in the in-hand feel between the two…the full size is definitely beefier. The compact also comes with a fiber optic front sight.

I preferred the compact, The Shmoo preferred the full size.

Last but not least in terms of guns, the Colt SA15.7…these come off the same line as the C7!

More great gear at FOC…Nanuk cases

And once again, my good friend Dan from Nanuk

Calibre magazine with Project UNUM on the cover!

Oh but wait, we are not done yet! I also popped into FOC’s warehouse

I didn’t buy any guns although I did get a Rehlm baseplate, which the company President was kind enough to install personally!

I am happy to report that it works with my gun so I may get some more.

So I am beginning to sound like a broken record in my FOC reviews, but what else can I say other than phenomenal job! Especially in our current political climate, it is so rewarding to see such a Canadian effort. I cant wait to see the next gun in the Signature series and I sure plan to be at the launch party!

As you might have seen in some of my posts, I am quite the John Wick fan. I was thrilled to have the opportunity at SHOT 2018 to handle the exact Taran Tactical Innovations Benelli M4 used in JW2.

““““““““““““““““““““““

More recently, I got a look at the awesome Trijicon Accupoint 1-6X that Mr. Wick prefers for his AR15.

““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““

As well as the Kel-Tec KSG12 that he nabbed from Vigo’s crew

““““““““““““““““““““““

And now for my ultimate score, my very own Taran Tactical Innovations John Wick Combat Master Package Glock 34 (TTIJWCMPG34)! Thanks so much to Canadian Tactical Cowboy Supplies!

Autographed box by Taran Butler, USPSA Grand Master, the first Glock Grand Master shooter in the history of the sport, and trainer to Mr. Wick.

Ta-da!

““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““

Specs on the TTIJWCMPG34 (per TTI’s website):

Tactical Matte Black Slide Finish
Ionbonded Bronze Barrel
Competition Trigger Job
Full Wrap Stipple – Right Handed
Scallop Cut Magazine Release
Single Undercut
TTI Competition Magwell for Gen 3/4 Glock
TTI Fiberoptic Sights Green

““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““

The TTIJWCMPG34 came with two mags with black TTI baseplates

““““““““““““““““““““““

I also have a red one from a previous purchase…along with a clear mag

““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““

After doing some research, I found out that Mr. Wick carried his TTIJWCMPG34 in a Bladetech Revolution holster. However, those have since been discontinued and replaced with the Bladetech Signature, which I got with the competition belt and matching double mag pouch (his preferred setup).

““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““

I will also get a custom JW themed holster made by Savoy Leather as soon as I get the artwork finalized. In anticipation, they have already custom made the companion belt embossed with “We Call Him Baba Yaga”.

““““““““““““““““““““““

And now for a couple of glory shots of the TTIJWCMPG34

““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““““““

I cant wait to shoot it and will be updating my review once I get a chance to do so. For now, I am super pleased with my TTIJWCMPG34 and thanks again to CTCS! I am now 1/1024 Baba Yaga!

Last year’s Range Day was a fantastic event and pretty hard to beat but with 75 guns on the line and a new venue for 2018 (Oxford Fish and Game Association), I think Select managed to do it! Once again I had a phenomenal time and it was super helpful to be able to comparison shoot so many guns.

Given that I am looking to get into precision rifles, I headed straight for the rifle range.

““““““““““““““““““

Thankfully Select put out a list of firearms before the event so I knew there would be a great selection to try and I stuck with my plan of starting with the Tikkas. First up the T3X TAC A1 with the BLK LBL forend featuring an integrated bipod and mounted with the fantastic Vortex Razor AMG 6-24X50 FFP MOA scope. Dave and I were both impressed with the glass.

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Next up, this beautiful custom build, a Tikka Tactical with PSE Composites E-Tac 4 stock, Vortex Razor HD 5-20X50 FFP MRAD scope …in retrospect I should have spent some time adjusting the stock as I was not as fast getting back on target with this one as the BLK LBL

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

My buddy Dave also shot the BLK LBL as well as this custom, a Tikka CTR with PSE Composites E-Lite stock, Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24X50 FFP MRAD. Dave was particularly interested in this one because that scope would be perfect for his gun…great glass at a very economical price.

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

There was a little competition where you win free swag if you hit the 4 steel gongs…sadly I only got 3 out of 4 with both guns. Fortunately, my buddy Dave was a better sniper and won a hat with both and generously gave one to me..thanks bro!

There were also some other Tikkas on the line

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

All supplied by and equipped with Vortex optics…it was great to talk to the Vortex reps, so helpful!

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Our next target was the Bergera in 6.5 Creedmore since neither of us had ever shot that caliber before. This time Dave went first

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Perhaps I am not experienced enough with precision rifles but truthfully I didn’t notice any real difference from the .308s and I preferred the Tikkas.

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Dave recently bought a Savage although he has not had a chance to shoot it yet and the Stealth was on my list…I gotta say it is a beautiful looking gun!

““““““““““““““““““

I did like the Accu-trigger and the action however I didn’t like the tubular stock..i found it awkward for my support hand and it wasn’t as easy to run the bolt and stay on target as it was with the more conventional stocks on the Tikka…again, this is why I love being able to do side by side comparisons at such events! Now I have a better sense of what kind of stocks I need.

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Dave also shot the Stealth

““““““““““““““““““

As well as the 10TR in .22 with its 10 round rotary mag and a dedicated Bushnell rimfire optic

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

All done with precision rifles, we moved on to other long guns. I shot the F1 AR15 at another show and loved it so wanted to try it again. Last time I shot it sitting down so this time I wanted to try standing. I liked it so much that I used two of my tickets on it lol…gotta get one of these!

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Dave liked it as well…both of us found it to be so light and well balanced.

““““““““““““““““““

Dave is looking for a mag fed shotgun so he gave the Derya a whirl..and bought quite a few tickets for the one Select was raffling off lol

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Ok, on to the handgun range…

Where we were greeted by the Sig display

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Including the new Mauser M-18…what a beautiful looking gun and less than $900!

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Once I again, I followed my plan and headed straight for the Glocks….

““““““““““““““““““

I had already tried the G19X at SHOT show but wanted to shoot it side by side with the Canadian edition G19

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

And what a difference!! The grip on the G19 is a lot smaller and was hard to hold on to…the gun seemed to move around in my hand.

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Dave wanted to shoot something in a larger caliber and opted for the FN FNX 45 Tactical, which he ended up preferring to the Glocks

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Our good friends at North Sylva also brought an X95 in 9mm that was high on my list to try…not surprisingly it was one of my favourites of the day.

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

That was it for our shooting but here is a sense of some other guns on the line…Sig

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Smith & Wesson

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Canuck

““““““““““““““““““

CZ Skorpion Evo

““““““““““““““““““

Apart from the Derya, we didn’t shoot any shotguns although there were plenty of those! The setup was for trap and skeet and there were huge lines during the day (my pics were taken before show opening)

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Speaking of huge lineups, as you can see in some of my pics, it was SUPER busy all day but things moved quickly as there were a staggering number of RSOs…I believe 73, one for every gun!

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Including my good friend, the legendary Stormbringer!!

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Glad to see Canadian Historical Arms Museum back at Select Range Day. Last year I took a pic with their M60 and joked about a Rambo pose…well joke was on me because I found out that the M60 in my pic was one of two used on the Rambo set!!!! WOW!

““““““““““““““““““

This time I took a pic with the Stinger…one of only a handful made by converting an aircraft gun into a handheld!

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

I didn’t get a pic of the CCFR booth but did run unto Gun Goddess Tracey Wilson

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Black Rifle Coffee Canada, that’s right the US brand, known to be veteran owned and operated, is now available in Canada with local ingredients.

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

I bought a bag of their Little Warriors brew, the proceeds of which go to help child victims of sexual abuse.

““““““““““““““““““

Before heading out, we stopped to get some t-shirts and give our thanks to the great crew at Select for doing such a great job on the event

““““““““““““““““““

Of course you cant go to such an event without stopping by the actual Select Shooting Supplies store so off we went to our next stop….

First up, a closer look at the Tikka T3X BLK LBL

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Oddly enough, my first time seeing a 590A1 with the bayonet installed…being a knife guy, I had to some shots of this one..i like it!

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Also being Hungarian, I was quite drawn to this FEG (on consignment)

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

The S&W RR8 has always been one of my favourite revolvers of all time

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Based on my earlier comments, the stock on this Savage might work better for me

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

Great selection of Bladetch…I got a competition belt, holster, and double mag pouch.

Finally, per Dean’s great recommendation, The Q BBQ Public House. Dave had the ribs and brisket, I had the Hillbilly Philly, a phillysteak made with brisket and one of the best phillysteaks I have ever had!

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““““

My swag for the day

““““““““““““““““““

See you next year!

North Sylva and Rangeview Sports Optics Day 2018

Wow some awesome kit at the North Sylva and Rangeview Sports Optics Day…I’ll take one of each!

““““““““““““““““

Being obsessed with all things John Wick, I started with the Trijicon Accupoint 1-6x…now I am also a big fan of Trijicon and I gotta say this scope exceeded my expectations! I will swap out my MRO for one of these as soon as I can.

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

Typically, it is challenging to get a pic of the reticle but I got this on the first try…needless to say, it is fast and easy to pick up!

““““““““““““““““

The secret, the fiber optic

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

The Accupower 4.5-30x56mm was also pretty sweet…and would be a great match to the HS Precision I was eyeballing

““““““““““““““““

Side by side comparison of the two Trijicons

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

Front end

““““““““““““““““

Business end

““““““““““““““““

Equally impressive, the new VUDU line from EOtech…including the 5-25×50 Ultra Short and 1-6x

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

The 1-6x features the “Speed Ring reticle” that is designed for fast acquisition at low power and accuracy at higher power while the 5-25x is one of the shortest FFP scopes on the market. Apart from fitting on shorter rifles, I like this advantage described on EOtech’s website: “One unique advantage of the short design is that it provides the ability to attach either a clip-on night-vision or thermal device in front of the scope and still allow the user to make adjustments to the device without leaving the scope.”

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

Quick throw lever

““““““““““““““““

Box

““““““““““““““““

Last but not least, a Meprolight Mepro 4x with fixed 4x magnification mounted on a Tavor7

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

I took the opportunity to take a second look at the HS Precision HTR…what a beauty! Whenever I hear the words “precision rifle” this is the first one that comes to my mind…it is definitely on “the list”

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

Since I did a full store review on my last visit, I just took a few shots

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

Great job by North Sylva and Rangeview on today’s event and thanks for the swag.

““““““““““““““““

All done here, I took a short (6 min) drive to Ground Burger Bar…pretty cool place..looks good, decent service and TONS of options for the burgers…you can choose meat, bread, toppings and since they grind in house, you can get the burgers rare etc.

““““““““““““““““

Nanuk vs. Seahorse vs. Pelican

Posted by rlaufer2013 on September 2, 2018
Posted in: Uncategorized. 3 Comments

I have always been a big fan of Pelican cases and have lots of them in all shapes and sizes, my favourite of which is the 1510 Laptop Overnight Case. However, Pelican doesn’t make many cases dedicated to handguns. Sure, you can cut their foam interiors to suit your needs, but it is not the same as something pre-designed with special features.

A few years ago I found a potential solution, the Seahorse SE540 4 pistol case. Unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations.

Since that time, I have heard a lot about Nanuk cases. I had the chance to explore their whole product line at the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show and again at TACCOM and was very impressed! I was also super impressed when I read about all of their certifications (plasticase.com/certifications/).

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

I especially liked the 925 as it seemed to solve all the problems with my Seahorse. I also liked the 909 single gun case as I sometimes take just one handgun to the range (to accompany my long-guns) and picked up one of each. (thanks to Nanuk for all the cool swag!)

““““““““““““““““

I am including the Pelican 1510 LOC in this review as at least the exterior is identical to their standard cases. Of course, its interior is not comparable here so I will leave it out of that part. Here is the lineup

““““““““““““““““

Looks / design: On the outside, the Seahorse does not look as good as the others. The Pelican looks the most military while the Nanuks are a bit lower key, definitely sleeker.

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

One interesting thing is that the tops of the Nanuks are flat which is more conducive to stacking or putting things on top of the case. I noticed this because I have used my Pelican case as a background for pictures and the beefy ridges running across the top have gotten in the way.

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

In terms of colour, I believe this particular Pelican case is only available in black (though their other styles come in more colours), the Seahorse is available in 4 colours and the Nanuk in 6. The graphite that I chose for the Nanuk 925 looks pretty classy IMHO.

““““““““““““““““

Case material: All the cases use different materials, such as Polypropylene copolymer for the Pelican and NK-7 resin for the Nanuk. I am not 100% sure about the Seahorse but per their website “we have cases made with fiberglass reinforced ABS, Calcium Carbonate additive in polypropylene, Nylon and Polycarbonate.” In terms of feel, the Seahorse is the slipperiest, the Pelican the roughest, and the Nanuk is in between.

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

The Pelican has had the most usage by far and it has picked up a few scratches. Time will tell how the other two hold up.

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

Latches: Again, all three brands have different latches, single throw for the Seahorse, Easy Open Double Throw for the Pelican, and the “Powerclaw” for the Nanuk. Unlike the other two cases, the Powerclaw latch on the Nanuk is attached to the bottom part of the case so it effectively pulls the top down when you lock it. Also, it is easy to use with the pull down tab that releases the latch.

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

The Seahorse wins for cool factor here as the purge valve is built into the latch! Seahorse says that their Automatic Pressure Purge System “guarantees a perfect seal by incorporating its own O-Ring under one of the latches. You will never forget to set the valve since it automatically activates when closing the case. Pressure is released as you open the latch.”

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

It is also the only case with key locks in addition to the padlock holes that are also found on the other cases. However, I understand that you can also get locking latches for the Nanuk.

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

Double Throw latch on the Pelican

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

Automatic pressure release valves on the Nanuk and Pelican for comparison

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

Carrying options: One of my biggest gripes with the Seahorse is that shape feels bulky to carry, which is ridiculously obvious when you compare it to the Nanuk…hard to believe they are both designed to carry 4 guns!

““““““““““““““““

The bulkiness of the Seahorse is made worse by the fact that the carry handle has sharp edges that dig into your hand.

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

By comparison, both the Pelican and Nanuk 925 have smoothed out carry handles. In the case of the Nanuk, the handle is over molded with soft rubber which is supposed to be shock absorbing to reduce fatigue…I haven’t used it for long but I can definitely say it is way more comfortable than the Seahorse.

““““““““““““““““

Pelican handle

““““““““““““““““

Interior foam: Once again, different approaches for each case here with cross link Polyethylene “Accu-form” foam in the Seahorse and closed cell PEF foam in the Nanuks. Of course, the overnight case does not have foam inside but typically Pelican would use “Pick N Pluck” open cell Polyurethane foam. I definitely like the closed cell foam in the Nanuk the best.

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

Interior layout: My biggest issue with the Seahorse is that the handgun cutouts are not really great for trigger locks. Of course, the product was designed by an American company so they did not take our transport rules into consideration. As a workaround I have used cable locks but I don’t really like those.

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““
Being a Canadian company, Nanuk did account for trigger locks and the layout is super.

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

It easily swallows handguns of all shapes and sizes, with or without any type of lock

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

It also takes single and double stack mags

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

The 909 has the “classic” interior which fits most handguns but there is a different interior for Glocks (which I will have to get for my inbound John Wick gun).

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

1911 with trigger lock fits easily in the single case

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

““““““““““““““““

Nice touch on the slot for silica gel inserts.

““““““““““““““““

Conclusion:

It should be obvious that the Nanuk case is far superior to the Seahorse product and there is not much more to say about that. So how does it compare to the Pelican? Well the best way that I can describe it is that the Pelican feels “old school” while the Nanuk feels very modern. Keep in mind that Nanuk was initially only available to the military up till the last few years and as you can see in the link I posted to their certifications, they match or exceed Pelicans performance in terms of being watertight, airtight, crushproof, and dust proof. They just do it in a different way…think brute force vs. elegant design or shotgun vs. precision rifle. So the bottom line is that I would definitely consider another Nanuk, in fact I am eyeing the dedicated AR case right now. Their great reputation is definitely warranted.
